Young at Heart

“That’s the real trouble with the world, too many people grow up.”

WALT DISNEY, attributed, The Quotable Walt Disney

I agree with Walt Disney’s observation that too often people grow up and forget how to appreciate the simpler things in life. There are some things that always bring me back to my childhood and cherished memories. Here are a few of my favorite childhood things:

Winnie the Pooh

Then: When I was born in the late 1960s, my parents decorated my nursery with a Winnie the Pooh theme. I grew up surrounded by the “tubby, little cubby all stuffed with fluff” and had a stuffed Winnie the Pooh that went with me everywhere.

Now: This “willy, nilly silly old bear” always bring back fond memories for me whenever I see him and hear his theme song. My family continues the Winnie the Pooh tradition by giving stuffed Pooh bears as baby gifts.

Then: I grew up having official A&W Root Beer Floats – we even had an A&W Stand in our town with curbside service. Summertime was an especially good time to enjoy this creamy treat.

Now: There’s just something about an old-fashioned root beer float that is comforting to me. I especially like a traditional float with a good cheeseburger and fries.

Then: A favorite after-school treat with a glass of milk, enjoying some Circus Animal Cookies was a tasty way to end the school day.

Now: Whenever we go to Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt, I add a couple of Circus Animal Cookies to my mix which brings me back to my childhood.

Attending baseball games

Then: When your Dad is an avid baseball fan and sports writer you grow up going to the baseball park often. Eating peanuts and Cracker Jacks, singing the 7th inning stretch song, and keeping score – part of what makes baseball one of America’s favorite pastimes.

Now: I don’t attend very many baseball games now as an adult, but when I do it reminds me of my childhood and hanging out at the ballpark with my family.

Coloring Books & Crayons

Then: There’s nothing like a new box of Crayola crayons and a coloring book full of designs and scenes to color.

Now: I still love to color – but I usually use colored pencils now instead of crayons. I recently saw a coloring book that I plan on getting very soon. It’s called Secret Garden: An Inky Treasure Hunt and Coloring Book by Johanna Basford. There’s something about coloring that is relaxing and reminds me of a simpler, less-stressful time.
