Located at the intersection of Pacific Highway and Harbor Drive in San Diego, The Headquarters at Seaport Village is a recently renovated historic space that has become a dining and shopping destination along the seashore for locals and visitors alike. Built in 1939, this building was the San Diego Police Department’s Headquarters for nearly 50 years. The architecture is a unique blend of several styles reflecting San Diego’s heritage. When it was dedicated, the Headquarters had five courtrooms, a law library, a jail, an indoor shooting range, an emergency hospital, and a maintenance garage.
Today as you dine al fresco and explore in the shops that encircle the central courtyard, the history of this reclaimed space has been maintained not only in the Spanish and Mediterranean inspired architecture, but also with a police exhibit featuring some of the old jail cells and historic photos. After sitting vacant and unused for 25 years, the Old Police Headquarters received a listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998 and was restored in 2013. The building has found a new life and is surrounded by an urban garden featuring palms, historic trees, and native plants. Inside the courtyard, the gardens continue in the landscaped plaza where there are benches and other areas that encourage lingering and socializing with friends and family. Special events and live entertainment are offered year-round and add to the appeal of The Headquarters.
When we visit The Headquarters, I enjoy checking out the hand-crafted wares of artisans from San Diego at the shop Simply Local and savoring a cup of creamy gelato from Gelato Paradiso by the courtyard fountain. Other specialty foods available are handmade chocolates and a cheese shop featuring cheeses from around the world. If you’re looking for something heartier, dining options include Puesto, Eddie V’s Prime Seafood, Seasons 52, and Cheesecake Factory. Window shoppers will find plenty to see (and possibly buy) at shops featuring clothing, sunglasses, accessories, toys, beach-themed décor, leather goods, and stationery.
The Headquarters at Seaport Village is both a beautifully reclaimed space and an icon that is uniquely San Diego. Check out the official Headquarters website for updated information and the events/entertainment schedule. http://theheadquarters.com/
