Challenge: Find the Devilicious food truck in San Diego
and try something from the menu.
After my food truck post about Grater Grilled Cheese, one of my childhood friends challenged me in early August to seek out the Devilicious food truck, also from San Diego, and sample something from its menu. She had seen Devilicious when it was on The Great Food Truck Race (Food Network, Season 2) and wanted to live vicariously through me since she now lives in Minnesota.
I checked out the Devilicious website for a schedule of upcoming locations and, as luck would have it, I was going to have a chance to check it out in mid-August when Devilicious was in Anaheim at the D23 (Disney) Expo. After checking out the exhibits in the convention center at D23, we headed outside to the food trucks for some lunch. I decided to try the Bacon Grilled Cheese with House Fries.
At this location in August, the menu was modified from what is on the website – possibly a simplified one because of traveling outside of San Diego County. The sandwich was cooked to perfection and had a good flavor. The Bacon Grilled Cheese was tasty, but now I wanted to try something else on the Devilicious menu. The search was on for a location in San Diego to try this food truck again!
Every week I checked the Devilicious site for the schedule – then in early October it finally worked out for me to try this food truck again in the University Town Center (UTC) area. This time I ordered the Crab Cake Sandwich – it’s served on an English muffin with a side green salad. The Crab Cake Sandwich was far better than the Bacon Grilled Cheese. I sent a picture of this sandwich via text message to my friend in Minnesota – she said it looked delicious and wished I could send her one!
When I visited in October, the food truck was parked outside an office complex in UTC. Since this was lunch time on a Tuesday in an office parking lot, I was a little surprised to see a group of elementary school students in line at the Devilicious food truck on some type of field trip. The former school teacher in me was intrigued by this “food truck field trip” concept so I struck up a brief conversation with the teacher.
The 5th grade students attend a project-based school in the area and are working on a project to design a food truck. The field trip consisted of visiting three different food trucks and taking notes about each one (such as: menu, price range, logo design, social media options, etc.). According to their teacher, in the upcoming weeks back at school, the students will develop a menu (nutrition), draft a business plan (math), and design a 3-D food truck concept complete with a logo and brand name (art). The culminating project is each team of students will pitch their food truck concept in a “Shark Tank” like setting. The winning team will then bring their food truck to life for their friends and family to enjoy. Talk about bringing learning to life! You can follow their adventures on Twitter @5thGradeRocs.
So, back to the challenge at hand. Should you try to track down the Devilicious food truck? In a word, YES! The food is yummy for the tummy! There are other items on the Devilicious menu that I was tempted to try – the dessert options were calling to me – but that will have to wait for another time! Be sure to follow Devilicious food truck on social media, like Facebook or Twitter, to find out where it’ll be for lunch or dinner. Hosting an event? You can also hire Devilicious for your next private party. If the devil is in the details, then Devilicious has them mastered. Devilicious food truck is downright heavenly!
Are you a food truck fan? What San Diego area trucks do you recommend?
