Nestled in the heart of San Diego is Balboa Park – a 1,200 acre urban park that is celebrating its centennial anniversary in 2015. There are many places to explore and experience from museums and a world-famous zoo to gardens and walking trails. Tucked in the northeast corner of Balboa Park, between the Zoo and the Natural History Museum, is the Spanish Village Art Center (SVAC) where you can see artists at work throughout the year.
At first glance, the Spanish Village looks like a collection of small cottages surrounding a patchwork quilt of colorful tiles. Many people may walk right by on their way to the Zoo or the museums of Balboa Park without realizing what they are missing by not entering this treasured space.
Spanish Village is home to historic working studios which feature over 200 local artists in a variety of mediums including painting, jewelry making, woodworking, blown glass, photography, and pottery to name a few. There are over 35 studios that are open daily 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. (closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, & New Year’s Day). The SVAC studios are filled with working artists and a variety of demonstrations happening daily. Classes and events (even art camps for adults) are offered at Spanish Village where you can learn how to create your own masterpieces and/or purchase unique pieces of art.
The next time you are exploring in Balboa Park, be sure to take some time to visit the studios and support the artists working on their next masterpieces at the Spanish Village Art Center. Admission is free yet the experience is priceless.
