Create a Christmas Village Display Table in Minutes
Christmas village displays are a cherished tradition in North America, dating back to the mid 20thcentury when families set up villages of miniature buildings in their homes. The earliest Christmas villages were most likely Nativity scenes in churches and homes and date back to the Renaissance, if not earlier.
In our house, we enjoy decorating for Christmas and we deck the halls right after Thanksgiving. One beloved decoration is our Christmas village display. Until this year however, we did not have an ideal way to showcase our winter village of miniature buildings. After an online search for DIY Christmas village tables, we set off to our local Home Depot to purchase supplies. Our original plan was to buy two saw horses that had adjustable height and a thin board. We envisioned a table that would be like a ladder bookshelf display that could be set up in minutes and would easily fold for storage when not in use.
When we visited Home Depot in San Diego, we discovered a product that took the place of the saw horses and helped make our Christmas village table even better than the original plan. The RIDGID Flip Top Portable Work Support turned out to be the best choice. We bought two of them and also bought a plywood board to set on top as the tabletop. On the way home, we stopped at JOANN Fabrics for decorative supplies to complete our DIY table. This solution was perfect for our space and Christmas village display.
The RIDGID flip top supports are already assembled and light but sturdy. Constructed of rugged steel with thick wall tubing and stable non-skid feet, they can also be adjusted vertically from 27 to 45 inches. The best part is they fold away easily for storage after the holidays. Let’s take a closer look at how we put this Christmas village display table together.

We have collected various Christmas village pieces through the years. Some pieces are Disney, Peanuts, and Harley-Davidson. Others are North Pole and items made exclusively for Sears and Knott’s Berry Farm at the Marketplace Emporium. Many of our village pieces are from City Lights, a special Christmas store in San Diego. City Lights features Christmas and seasonal collectible décor and gifts year-round. Each year we add some accessories or a building.
The DIY Christmas village display we created turned out better than we anticipated. If you are looking for an alternative for displaying your village that is easy to store when not in use, hopefully the solution shared here will work for you.
